The Thompson River originates in 2 separate braches, a north branch that originates in the Valemount area, and a south branch that originates in the Shushwap area.

The Thompson is the largest tributary flowing into the Fraser River. The Thompson River and it's tributaries essentially act as a major drainage route for the mountains around and to the north & east of the Kamloops region.

The Thompson River is known for recreational activities like river rafting and fishing, however, the Thompson is world famous among fresh water recreational fishing enthusiast's as one of the world's leading Steelhead Rivers. The Thompson produces some of the world's healthiest and largest Steelhead trout. Many fishermen use the sleepy town of Spences Bridge as a base camp when fishing for the Thompson River Steelhead.
